New Artwork – Ex-S Gundam space version

I decided to do 1 last Ex-S artwork before I move on. This time, I tried to make it as complete as possible by adding some meaning and to put it into context. So therefore I went for an anime style look with a full background painting! I had set the gundam up with a dynamic attacking pose as it is soaring through space preparing for battle. What would make this artwork even better is if there was a full battle going on in the background, but unfortunately I don’t have the resources (yet) to get to such level of detail!

I used a new rendering technique called Toon Render this time and was quite happy with the results. It means I won’t have to do everything by hand like I had done in the past! However there is still room for improvement and I kinda fudged my way through.

This will perhaps be my last Ex-S artwork and I will surely miss working on it. So I hope to make this one my best piece to date and I think I am satisfied =). However, I have many more gundams lined up and will be looking forward to creating new and higher quality ones.

New artwork – Deep Striker vector lineart

I’ve been away from the gundam scene for far too long, mainly because I had to apply for a new job which is all sorted now. I also got a promotion which I’m really happy about =). My Weibritter project has been put on hold for over half a year even though it’s already 80% complete. But getting back into a big project is hard so I decided to ease my way back in by doing a simple line drawing. Only that it didn’t turn out to be as simple as I hoped!

I decided to do a lineart of my Deep Striker figure. It’s insanely detailed and I never get sick of looking at it, never. What first seemed like an easy job ended being one of the most daunting works I’ve had to grind through. It’s the sheer amount of detail. This made me appreciate the works of mecha designers even more because they’re just at such an incredible level, being able to sketch the 3D geometries and detail all from the head, really is something amazing.

Here is my Deep Striker lineart, completed in Illustrator and took exactly 13hrs to do. Hope you like it.

Launching the new jaychan.net

The latest Jaychan.net is finally up! There’re still some bugs here and there but I think it’s at a presentable stage now. It’s not optimised for IE yet so I still have to get that fixed. But in the mean time, please check it out!

Starcraft battlecruiser – made from paper

Battlecruiser papercraft complete

Recently I got into papercrafting after seeing the really inspiring Princess Zelda life size model. Drawing from my cardboard display experience, I thought it shouldn’t be too difficult but rather more time consuming since it all required manual labour. So I decided to take the challenge and secretly build a Starcraft battlecruiser for chibi =). I gave myself 1 week for this project as I couldn’t take the risk having chibi enter my room because I knew I was gona make a big mess and she’d find out for sure! So off to work I go and there wasn’t a single minute to waste.

Erika Toda Digital Painting

Inspired by Chibi’s recent paintings and taking a break from gundams, I decided to do a digital painting of one of my favourite actresses – Erika Toda. This painting was really fun, it’s always amazing seeing your work slowly come to life (=. So here it is – Digital painting of Erika Toda (she also played Misa Misa from Death Note live action).

Project Ex-S stage 1 complete!

This took longer than I expected but finally, stage 1 S-Gundam 3D model is finally complete!  I’m quite happy with the overall result. I paid extra attention to detail and reproduced all the logo’s in illustrator. This time I tried not to stray away too much from the original design like what alot of people tend to do, but instead I tried to accurately remodel the design from the individual parts to the textures. I want it to stay true to Hajime Katoki’s vision as much as possible.

EX-s S-gundam 3D model

Probably one of my favourite gundams of all time. What I love about S-gundam the most is how realistic the design is. Unlike modern gundams such as Exia and Freedom that uses a form of unique energy source such as the Solar Reactor and N-Jammer canceller respectively, S-Gundam uses traditional rocket boosters and fuel. It’s also highly customisable with the ability to upgrade it’s armour and weapons into what would then be known as the Ex-S Gundam.
 
This project took roughly 2 months but ‘stage 2: Ex-S Gundam’ should be the easiest out of the 3 stages as it’s only some additional parts. ‘Stage 3: Deepstriker’ would be the hardest due to the sheer amount of details but it should be fun!.
 
I will take a short break now as it has been rather mentally draining. Gundam modelling isn’t easy when you have a Full-time job and a girlfriend to take care of. But I look forward to begin my next journey soon and turn the S-gundam into it’s rightful Ex-S form. I hope to improve my 3D skills even further and create some much more detailed illustrations =)
